This year’s holiday party theme for cool kid brand Luar was “Baddies on Ice.” Why? “I mean we’re baddies and we’re on ice,” said recent CFDA winner and designer of the brand, Raul Lopez, wearing a Luar patchwork fur jacket with the label’s signature exaggerated shoulder pads and matching pants. “Sometimes it’s just about looking cute, and all you need are a pair of fur snow boots.”
Just like the brand’s New York Fashion Week show a few months ago, on a recent cold Thursday night the girls were lined up around the Bushwick block (the event was held at StudioSkate at 99 Scott) in their finest furs and puffer coats. “I just really need to be in there,” one person said as they walked to the back of the line in a metallic blue coat. Sure, everyone wanted to look good, but there was also a contest happening that night. The baddest of them all would win the “It” girl accessory of the season: a Luar Ana purse. The brand’s bag design was inspired by Lopez’s grandmother and mom with a horseshoelike handle. When I asked Lopez earlier in the night if he was going to be the judge, he said, “Nah.” He didn’t want that much pressure on him, but he knew that whomever he asked to judge would have taste because “all of his daughters do.” (He refers to a handful of his friends as his “daughters,” honey.)
In between sips of rum-spiked hot chocolate and roasting s’mores, some partygoers took a twirl on the ice. (Did I mention there was an ice-skating rink?) When I asked one attendee, blogger Stephen Antonio, who he thought would win, he looked himself up and down and said, “Me. I came to win. I didn’t come to play; I came to slay.” (The winner was Elvin Tavarez aka @friedplatano, who also DJ’d.)
